Introduction
During the course of the Clone Wars, the Phase 1 armor donned by Republic troops was an iconic symbol of the Clone Military. However, due to its lack of comfort and extreme weight, it was eventually replaced by Phase 2 armor, which was much lighter while also offering better protection and greater maneuverability. This armor is also significant for its similarity to the menacing armor worn by Imperial Stormtroopers several years later. This armor signifies that the Clone Wars are nearing their end and that a change is on the rise.
"Our presence let the galaxy know that the days of the old Republic were well and truly over." - Star Wars Battlefront II
With some staff on our server wishing to move to Phase 2 armor for our Clones, I have decided to compile a report on the pros and cons of doing so as well as how this change would affect our server.
Pros
Timeline Consistency
Goliath Gaming has been around for well over a year. With a recent reboot, it seems that we are on the rise to becoming a highly populated server in the near future. Many of the staff, understandably, have grown a little tired of playing Clone Wars RP after a year of the same-old same-old. Since the server has existed for so long, it only makes sense that we move to Phase 2 soon. It would give staff more reason to get on and would allow Gamemasters to come up with better events, as the Clones will have hardened from 2+ years of war.
Rise of the Empire
As previously stated, the Phase 2 armor preceded the Stormtrooper armor worn by soldiers of the Galactic Empire. With the move to Phase 2, this would symbolize a step forward in Star Wars canon and would be preferable to some players who wish to convert the server into Imperial RP. This would also allow Gamemasters to plan canon battles, such as the Siege of Mygeeto, the Defense of Kashyyyk, and of course, the infamous Order 66.
Order 66
Often known as one of the greatest accomplishments of the Galactic Empire was its extermination of the Jedi Order. This great feat was accomplished in less than a month with thousands of Jedi being slaughtered by their own troops. Arguably, one of the most famous lines in Star Wars is a phrase uttered by Palpatine - "The time has come. Execute Order 66." This is an event that many Clone Wars players anticipate and wish to recreate, and if done correctly, the Order 66 event can be a defining moment in a Star Wars RP server.
Model For Me, Would You?
Apparently there are a good number of Phase 2 Clone trooper models that are better than any Phase 1 models that the server currently has. This extra resource means that there could be more battalions, better skins, and more choice as to what skins a normal trooper can pick from.
You Will Know the Power of the Dark Side
Once the move to Imperial RP has been completed, many fan-favorite characters will be present, including Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Grand Moff Tarkin, and General Veers, to name a few. This will add variety to events and allow Gamemasters to mold events around a certain character, or to implement certain objectives that would otherwise be impossible.
Kill Everyone Aboard
The move to Phase 2 and Imperial would allow the Clones to act more brutally and not have to stay on everyone's good graces. While Phase 1 Clones would negotiate with the enemy, Phase 2 Clones or Stormtroopers would simply shoot to kill. It would free players from being stuck to being the "good guys". This would also allow Gamemasters to implement other types of enemies into events without it being forced. For example, Clones would not be forced to fight only the CIS, but as Stormtroopers could possibly fight the Black Sun Syndicate, the Rebel Alliance, bounty hunters, or simply native dissidents.
Cons
We Never Really Got Used To the New Guys
With the move to Phase 2 armor, it is only logical that the server eventually transforms into Imperial RP. While the change to Phase 2 would take time to implement (roughly 1 to 2 months at minimum), the current most popular version of Star Wars RP is Clone Wars RP. Imperial RP does not seem to be as popular. This may be attributed to the younger ages of Star Wars RP players, who see Clones as superior to Stormtrooopers (which is a subject of some debate). Implementing Imperial RP would mean that we would risk not getting as many players on a daily basis. While all of our current troops would likely stay with us, we risk cutting our playerbase. While changing to Phase 2 will not affect the server too much, the eventual move to Imperial RP may.
Aim Worse than a Stormtrooper
While the lack of efficiency seen in the Star Wars Original Trilogy is explained, many Star Wars fans steamroll any attempt at logical conclusion and simply state, "Hey, the Clones aren't great, but at least they can aim!" Because the Garry's Mod Star Wars RP community regularly pulls in players under 18 years of age, many are not enthusiastic about playing as Stormtroopers, as many younger fans bullheadedly believe that "Clones are better. They just are." As stated previously, this may cut our playerbase, which could lead to fewer new players.
Order 66
Many Gamemasters (myself included) believe that, due to the significance of Order 66 in the Star Wars canon, that it would have to be an event where everything would go perfectly. The RP would have to be extremely serious during the event and the planning of the event itself would require all hands to be on deck. With such a daunting task ahead of us, some of the staff would like to postpone or altogether scrap any plans of creating an Order 66 event due to its chances of failure being much higher than any event Goliath has ever planned.
Conclusion
While this is not an exhaustive list, it is one that contains many of the possible good and bad points of moving to Phase 2, and eventually Imperial RP. The change to Phase 2 would take roughly 1 to 2 months by my calculations, and the change to Imperial RP would likely come until the summer of 2017 or later. The pros and cons of the change have all been listed and now I ask you to vote on this matter. If you have read to the end of this document, I would first like to thank you and second, I would like you to let other people currently on Goliath Gaming of this document's existence and the importance of coming to a conclusion based on staff and user feedback. As of January 3rd, 2017, this document will remain up for 2 weeks in order to gather the correct amount of feedback.
1. I would like to move to Phase 2 Clone Troopers and eventually move on to Imperial RP, though I realize that these changes will not occur for several months.
2. I do not want to change over to Phase 2 Clone Troopers and eventually move on to Imperial RP. I believe that the server is fine the way it is and should remain Phase 1 indefinitely.
